There are many ways to make use of an empty space. You can just simply exist, doing nothing or you can create something. The product of a creation reflects the creator thoughts. Living in a capatilist society, it seems natural for one to make profit on a particular creation that was made in empty space. An example of this would be real estate, which always belongs to the 'royals', it is claimed then profited from. The art of selling empty space versus the art of creating out of empty space.

In the industrial part of Brooklyn, scattered with abandoned buildings and werehouses that packages and ships a whole bunch of nothing, there exist a 20,000 square foot place known as '3rd Ward'. It defines itself as "...a 20,000 sq. ft. workspace and studio facility for artists & creative professionals, located in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn". But to me, and a few other artists, it is a movement, not a movement which stands for something, or against something, but one that moves, or creates, with in empty space. This empty space known as 3rd ward is home to many of artists who just want to create. They may not be creating for reasons that involve commerce, but simply for sake of creating.

In New York, producing the resources for the luxury of the arts proves to even more difficult than finding a place to crash. 3rd ward is the answer for the "starving artists" who knows their time is coming but still need the resources to make it happen. 3rd Ward includes a computer lab with about fourteen Mac G4 and five G5. It is a perfect and quite place to go finish projects in one of the many applications available, from Dreamweaver to Final Cut. Or you may choose to go into the professional music studio or the photo studio to make em' believe what you 'see'. As an self-proclaimed artist, the ability to express oneself is crucial to one's existence. Without the means to do so, it is comparable to being paralyzed from head to toe. Until recently, 3rd Ward even had a dance studio. A place to come to create in empty space for a very reasonable monthly fee, $30.00, by New York Standards.
In addition to providing space, 3rd Ward often throws party for apparently no reason, along with art shows and openings. The 'Spring 2008 Solo Show' is a show giving young artist the opportunity to showcase their work. In addition, it will give the selected artist $1,000. Incentive, such as these, can be encouraging and inspiring to artists who live for their work, and pay for it by starving. If this is not good enough, 3rd Ward also offers classes such as music production, web design, sculpturing and more. Oh yeah, sometimes I just go there to sleep on the couch in the front.
